Description: Aldehyde dehydrogenases (ALDHs) mediate the NADP+-dependent oxidation of aldehydes into acids and play an important role in the detoxification of alcohol-derived acetaldehyde, as well as in lipid peroxidation and in the metabolism of corticosteroids, biogenic amines and neurotransmitters. ALDH3A2 (aldehyde dehydrogenase 3 family, member A2), also known as SLS, FALDH or ALDH10, is a 485 amino acid single-pass membrane protein that localizes to the cytoplasmic side of the endoplasmic reticulum and belongs to the aldehyde dehydrogenase family. Expressed in a variety of tissues, including liver, heart, lung, brain, kidney and placenta, ALDH3A2 catalyzes the NAD+-dependent oxidation of long-chain aliphatic aldehydes to fatty acids, a process that is necessary for detoxification and lipid metabolism. Defects in the gene encoding ALDH3A2 are the cause of Sjoegren-Larsson syndrome (SLS), an autosomal recessive neurocutaneous disorder characterized by severe mental retardation, seizures and speech defects. Multiple isoforms of ALDH3A2 exist due to alternative splicing events.

Description: T2R16 is a 291 amino acid multi-pass membrane protein that belongs to the G-protein coupled receptor T2R family. Acting in the oral cavity and the gastrointestinal tract, T2R16 is a gustducin-coupled receptor that is implicated in the perception of bitter compounds. T2R16 mediates responses to certain taste through PLC ∫2, a phospholipase C selectively expressed in taste tissue, and the calcium-regulated cation channel TRPM5. Expressed in a subset of gustducin-positive taste receptor cells of the tongue and epithelia, T2R16 confers bitter perception of salicin to non-taster mice. The gene that encodes T2R16 consists of 996 bases and maps to human chromosome 7q31. Chromosome 7 houses over 1,000 genes, comprises nearly 5% of the human genome and has been linked to Osteogenesis imperfecta, Pendred syndrome, Lissencephaly, Citrullinemia and Shwachman-Diamond syndrome. The Lys-172 polymorphism in T2R16 is associated with genetic susceptibility to alcoholism.

Description: P62, also known as Sequestosome I, is a 62kDa, 440 amino acid protein, initially identified as a ligand of the SH2 domain of p56lck, now known to be expressed in many tissues. In addition to TRAF6, PEST and zinc finger motifs, p62 has a C-terminal ubiquitin binding association (UBA) domain with an affinity for multi-ubiquitin chains, and it is considered to serve as a scaffold protein, capable of binding to multiple signalling molecules and uniting receptor-mediated signalling events with ubiquitinylation. Elevated levels of p62 have been reported in breast tumours and in alcoholic liver disease where p62 has been shown to be involved in the formation of Mallory bodies. Several mutations in the p62 UBA domain have been identified and the etiology of Paget’s disease of bone has been linked to one such mutation. Kuusisto and colleagues have demonstrated that p62 is also present in elevated levels in the hallmark inclusions found in various neurodegenerative conditions, including tauopathies (Alzheimer’s disease, Picks disease, and frontotemporal dementia) and synucleinopathies (Parkinson’s disease, dementia with Lewy body disease and multiple system atrophy). In recent years ubiquitin immunostaining has been used to provide adjunct information for neuropathological diagnosis, but it is becoming evident that p62 may be an even more reliable marker of neurodegenerative disease inclusion detection than tau, alpha-synuclein or ubiquitin immunostaining.

Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin necessary for growth, reproduction, differentiation of epithelial tissues, and vision.RBP1 is the carrier protein involved in the transport of retinol (vitamin A alcohol) from the liver storage site to peripheral tissue. Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin necessary for growth, reproduction, differentiation of epithelial tissues, and vision. The gene harbors four exons encoding 24, 59, 33, and 16 amino acid residues respectively. The second intervening sequence alone occupies 19 kb of the 21 kb of the gene.

Description: Below 35 to 40 °C gelatin swells and absorbs approximately 5 to 10 times its weight of water to form a gel. Gelatin is soluble in glycerol and acetic acid, and more soluble in hot than in cold water. It is practically insoluble in most organic solvents such as alcohol, chloroform, carbon disulphide, carbon tetrachloride, ether, benzene, acetone and oils. Sterile solutions of gelatin stored cold are stable indefinitely, but at elevated temperatures hydrolysis or rupture of peptide bonds occurs, increasing the number of free amino groups. Gel strength and viscosity gradually weaken upon prolonged heating in solution above ~40 °C; this degradation is accelerated by extremes in pH, proteolytic enzymes and bacterial action.
