Description: Zinc-finger proteins contain DNA-binding domains and have a wide variety of functions, most of which encompass some form of transcriptional activation or repression. The majority of zinc-finger proteins contain a Kruppel-type DNA binding domain and a KRAB domain, which is thought to interact with KAP1, thereby recruiting histone modifying proteins. As a member of the krueppel C2H2-type zinc-finger protein family, ZNF131 (Zinc finger protein 131) is a 623 amino acid nuclear protein that contains one BTB (POZ) domain and six C2H2-type zinc fingers. With predominant expression found in brain, it is likely that ZNF131 plays a role as a transcription regulator during development and organogenesis of the adult central nervous system. ZNF131 also represses ER Alpha (Estrogen receptor alpha)-mediated transactivation by interrupting ER?binding to the estrogen-response element. There are two isoforms of ZNF131 that are produced as a result of alternative splicing events.

Description: The RING-type zinc finger motif is present in a number of viral and eukaryotic proteins and is made of a conserved cysteine-rich domain that is able to bind two zinc atoms. Proteins that contain this conserved domain are generally involved in the ubiquitination pathway of protein degradation. RNF185 (ring finger protein 185), also known as FLJ38628, is a 192 amino acid multi-pass membrane protein containing one RING-type zinc finger. Two RNF185 isoforms exist as a result of alternative splicing, and the gene encoding RNF185 maps to human chromosome 22, which houses over 500 genes and is the second smallest human chromosome. Mutations in several of the genes that map to chromosome 22 are involved in the development of Phelan-McDermid syndrome, Neurofibromatosis type 2, autism and schizophrenia.

Description: The protein encoded by this gene is a zinc finger transcriptional activator that binds methylated DNA. The encoded protein can form homodimers or heterodimers through the zinc finger domains. In mouse, inhibition of this protein has been associated with apoptosis in some cell types.

Description: Ubr7 is a 425 amino acid protein that contains one UBR-type zinc finger and one PHD zinc finger. Participating in protein modification events within the N-end rule pathway, Ubr7 functions as an E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase that recognizes and binds proteins that contain destabilizing N-terminal residues, thereby leading to their ubiquitination and subsequent degradation.

Description: The BTB (Broad-Complex, Tramtrack and Bric a brac) domain, also known as the POZ (Poxvirus and Zinc finger) domain, is an N-terminal homodimerization domain that contains multiple copies of kelch repeats and/or C2H2-type zinc fingers. Proteins that contain BTB domains are thought to be involved in transcriptional regulation via control of chromatin structure and function. ZBTB1 (zinc finger and BTB domain containing 1), also known as KIAA0997, is a 713 amino acid nuclear protein that contains one BTB (POZ) domain and 8 C2H2-type zinc fingers. ZBTB2 is a 514 amino acid nuclear protein that contains one BTB (POZ) domain and 4 C2H2-type zinc fingers. ZBTB25, also known as ZNF46 or KUP, is a 435 amino acid nuclear protein that is expressed mainly in hematopoietic cells and testis and contains one BTB (POZ) domain and 2 C2H2-type zinc fingers.

Description: Zinc is an essential cofactor for more than 50 classes of enzymes and is involved in protein, nucleic acid, carbohydrate, and lipid metabolism, plus the control of gene transcription, growth, development, and differentiation. Zinc cannot passively diffuse across cell membranes and requires specific transporters, such as SLC39A7, to enter the cytosol from both the extracellular environment and from intracellular storage compartments.
