Methyl p-Hydroxybenzoate is the methyl ester of p-hydroxybenzoic acid. Typically used as a preservative in foods, beverages and cosmetics.
It can be used to inhibit yeast growth and can also be used as an antimicrobial agent for gram-positive anaerobic bacteria. It must be suspended in ethanol first, since it does not dissolve readily in water. It is also indicated to have some pheromonal properties.
Slightly soluble in water (1 g/400 ml); soluble in warm oil (1 g/40 ml) or warm glycerol (1 g/70 ml); freely soluble in alcohol (50 mg/mL methanol - clear, colorless solution), acetone or ether.
Caution: Research Use Only (RUO).
