Orange G

Orange G is used primarily as a histological stain.

It is a pale dye that is used for faint background staining. It is used as a counterstain for a number of nuclear stains including hematoxylin, safranin O, crystal violet, methyl green and basic fuchsin. Also used as a plasma stain. Orange G is a major component in the Papanicolaou stain, which is used in cervical cytology. The compound has been used to stain cells secreting growth hormone in the anterior pituitary and stain the mature bone orange. Orange G has also been incorporated in the following: Mallory's connective tissue stain,Flemming's triple stain on paraffin sections of onion root, Kreyberg's method for keratin and mucus and prostatic carcinoma cells, as a counterstain following Heidenhain's iron hematoxylin on paraffin sections and in the Wilson-Ezrin method for pituitary acidophils. It is also used as a collagen stain for connective tissue. Used with Orcein, Alizarin Blue 2B, and Fast Green FCF in Kornhauser′s quadruple stain for most elementary structures of tissues.
